SkyWarnUK Warnings: - Please See Banner Alert!
SkyWarn UK operates a combined weather alert and spotter activation system. Details of the alert and activation criteria are below:
Green
- Thunderstorms are not forecast; severe wind gusts or disruptive
precipitation are not forecast. The spotter network is not activated.
Amber
- Thunderstorms are forecast, with a low risk of these becoming
severe*; low risk of tornado development; widespread and potentially
disruptive rainfall or snowfall (not associated with thunderstorms) is
forecast; frequent and widespread wind gusts of at least 60 mph (not
associated with thunderstorms) are forecast. The spotter network is
activated. Spotters should submit reports as requested.
Red
- Thunderstorms are forecast, with a moderate to high likelihood of
these becoming severe*; moderate / high risk of tornado development;
widespread and damaging wind gusts in excess of 80 mph (not associated
with thunderstorms) are forecast. The spotter network is activated.
Spotters should submit reports as requested.
SkyWarn UK defines a Severe Thunderstorm as a thunderstorm accompanied by one or more of the following: one or more tornadoes and / or one or more waterspouts; hail of at least 20 mm in diameter; winds gust of at least 55 mph
UK Met Office Weather Warnings: Please See Banner Alert!
Flash warnings of severe or extreme weather
These are issued when the Met Office has 80% or greater confidence that severe weather is expected in the next few hours.
Early warnings of severe or extreme weather
These are issued when the Met Office has 60% or greater confidence that severe weather is expected in the next few days.
Advisory of severe or extreme weather
These advisories are issued by 1300 daily as routine, though they may be updated at other times if required. They indicate confidence of expected severe or extreme weather. Early warnings and Flash Warnings supersede advisories when confidence levels are 60% or greater.
ICE & Frost Warnings: Please See Banner Alert!
Frost Alerts - These are issued when the Temperature drops below 3C for Frost Alerts, because under 3C, you are approaching the temperature required for Frost.
ICE Alerts - These are issued when the Temperature drops below 1C and below, because this is the temperature required for ICE, especially if there is Rainwater present on the ground before hand and during.
Snow Warnings: Please See Banner Alert!
These are issued when the conditions of the Temperature, Humidity, Dew Point Temperature and Rainfall, match those required for Snow.
High Wind Gust & Speed Warnings: Please See Banner Alert!
These are issued when either the Wind Speed or Gust, has been over 30mph within the last 1hr
